2021 WEDDING TRENDS

Farewell 2020!  We have a lot to look forward to in 2021; so much so that I am sharing this post a little earlier than usual.  Blogging about wedding trends is turning into a bit of an annual tradition at AME and the truth is, we are so excited to celebrate many beautiful and unique wedding celebrations next year.  From intimate gatherings to bold backdrops, check out what you can expect to see next year in the world of weddings.

Small but mighty

This may sound obvious, but the most visible trend will be the micro wedding.  A micro wedding is defined by brides.com as an intimate affair, typically with no more than 50 guests.  It is almost a sure fire bet that gathering numbers will continue to be small, but if the 2020 weddings were any indication, these small celebrations still proved incredibly gorgeous and meaningful.  Micro weddings continue to have the same elements as a large wedding, but with a very guest centered approach.  Any of our micro wedding couples will tell you to go for it - you can still book the photographer, the florals and the caterer you want AND your budget will fall way under what was originally planned.

In 2021, we are further supporting couples opting for a sustainable, micro wedding concept as we launch the Pop-Up Chapel, on Friday, May 14 at Kitchen Sync in Winnipeg.  Click Here for more information and learn how a socially distanced chapel is still #CoolerThanCityHall

Video Video Video

Technology has continued to evolve wedding experiences through the years, and we predict MORE couples will continue to embrace technology, particularly video in 2021.  With friends and family spread across the world, live streaming your ceremony can be the easiest way to include elderly guests, family and friends in the celebration from the comfort of their own home.  If a livestream proves too costly, a same day video edit or highlights video is a great way to capture the day to enjoy for years to come.

Safety, but make it cute

Wedding Planners always have a responsibility to guide their clients in order to execute safe functions, but this will be heightened in 2021 to ensure every event remains compliant with local COVID restrictions.  Our clients depend on us to monitor updates daily and develop detailed risk assessment checklists to implement on their wedding day.  Our goal is to make the event safe and as ‘low risk’ as possible, but also to maintain a positive and upbeat atmosphere.  In an effort to bring a little joy and beauty to these events, we continue to embrace safety by incorporating personalized masks, mini hand sanitizers and signage and floor decals marking safe distances between guests. We also oversee additional cleaning and sanitization of common surfaces throughout an event, ensure all staff are wearing personal protective equipment and food is pre-packaged or individually plated at all times.

Tents and Lighting

We all know that fresh air as is best in these times and the increased outdoor gathering numbers reflect this, so tents are more popular than ever.  Outdoor weddings with open sided tents have lead to a surge in demand for tenting and mood lighting.  We saw everything from clear top to white vinyl to al fresco inspired weddings last summer and in 2021 we expect to see this continue as THE safest option for event execution.  The special detailing with tent weddings with respect to layout and lighting ambiance makes each function unique and so special.  We LOVED these laid back, elegant weddings that proved sentimental and gorgeous.  The caveat – tent weddings come with a TON of logistics and special considerations, so look out for a separate blog post dedicated to tent weddings in early 2021!

A few laughs

We hope that embracing humour during the planning process is a trend that’s here to stay.  From change-the-dates or unsave-the-dates, the amount of communications to guests and vendors is on the rise and couples are finding ways to laugh through it all. After a tough year, it’s refreshing to receive an email that brings a smile to guests near and far.  Wedding websites are a great way to convey a little personality while couples can share FAQ’s and updated information, all infused with personal anecdotes and laughter.

Big Backdrops

One of our absolute FAVOURITE trends is the infusion of BOLD décor in the wedding day décor plan. Couples are opting for colourful arch, semi arch and layered backdrops with bright bloom accents.  This compliments the surge in bright colour palettes and prints and we expect couples will continue to build unexpected palettes into their wedding décor and move in the direction of fun, bright and happy as we start to gather again.

To add to the colour trend, Pantone has just announced their colours of the year – Ultimate Grey and Illuminating – a marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.  Expect everything from fashion to home décor to special events to include elements of these colours in the new year.
